'''IT wiki''' is an Ubuntu-based Digital Ocean droplet. It hosts the CES IT wiki, which is powered by MediaWiki. It has weekly backups provided by Digital Ocean. SSL certificates are provided by Let's Encrypt.

==Configuration==

===VisualEditor installation===
VisualEditor is a MediaWiki extension written in PHP. It is located in
/var/www/html/extensions
. MediaWiki's configuration file is
/var/www/html/LocalSettings.php
. MediaWiki has been configured to load VisualEditor, and to access the Parsoid via http://localhost:8000. VisualEditor is not loaded by default for each user. They must elect to edit with Visual Editor.

It requires Parsoid, a Node.js package. Node.js runs independently of Apache. The VisualEditor uses an API via HTTP on port 8000 to interact with Parsoid. This traffic is not encrypted because it does not leave the host. Parsoid's configuration file is located at
/usr/local/lib/node_modules/parsoid/config.yaml
. It is copied from the default packaged configuration at config-example.yaml.

The CES wiki API is not at the default address, https://ces-wiki.fas.harvard.edu/w/api.php. The Parsoid configuration has been updated to reflect the correct address, [[Api.php|https://ces-wiki.fas.harvard.edu/api.php]]. Because the wiki is private, Parsoid cannot access the wiki API without a password. Permissions have been updated to be public for the localhost and private for the rest of the world. It does not test for the literal "localhost" but rather the server's IP address, 192.241.158.155.

MediaWiki was updated to 1.33 because VisualEditor was not compatible with 1.30.

To start Parsoid, navigate to
/usr/local/lib/node_modules/parsoid
, and run
npm start
. This process will end as soon as the terminal is closed, causing VisualEditor to fail to load.

===PM2===
To run Parsoid as a daemon, the Node.js package pm2 was installed. To start Parsoid as a service, run the following:

pm2 start /usr/local/lib/node_modules/parsoid/bin/server.js

===Backing up the databases===
The databases can be backed up using the following command:

mysqldump --all-databases > ~/Backups/$(date +%F)_wiki_db_backup.sql

Backups are stored in
/home/peterstevens/Backups
. Old backups do not clear out. Additionally, DigitalOcean backs up the entire server image once a week.

===Updating MediaWiki===
Always back up the database and the image assets before updating. MediaWiki can be updated by creating new directory
/var/www/html_upgrade
and unzipping the latest copy of MediaWiki there. Then, copy the following files and directories from
/var/www/html
:

*
LocalSettings.php

*
images

*
skins

*
resources/assets/Blocks_RGB_160.png

*
resources/assets/favicon-16x16.png

Set
html_upgrade
permissions to 755. Rename
html
to
html_old
, and rename
html_upgrade
to
html
. At this point, requests to the server will likely fail, because the database schema has not been updated. Change directory to
/var/www/html/maintenance
, and run the following command:

php update.php

If the schema hasn't been changed, a rollback is as simple as renaming
html
back to
html_upgrade
, and
html_old
back to
html
. If the schema has changed, the database will need to be blown up and recreated using the latest backup.

===Job runner===
There is a bash script at
/usr/local/bin/mwjobrunner
which runs MediaWiki maintenance scripts every ten seconds. It is based on this webpage: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Job_queue#Simple_service_to_run_jobs. There is no service to run it at startup.

===Cron jobs===
The database is backed up once a day at midnight. Let's Encrypt renews its certificate every three months.

===Restarting===
If you restart the server, the necessary daemons may not run at startup. Apache, MySQL, and Parsoid may need to be started manually.

===Mail===
In order for MediaWiki to send mail, [[Peter Stevens]] installed PEAR, Mail, and Net_SMTP. It is currently configured to send from peterstevens@fas.harvard.edu. This will be updated with a new address. The configurations for the SMTP server are located in
/var/www/html/LocalSettings.php
. Mail and Net_SMTP are PHP packages located in
/usr/share/php/
.

==Logs==

*
/var/log/apache2

*
/var/log/php7

=== Cannot connect to database ===
The MySQL daemon has inexplicably exited before. This issue can be corrected by simply running:

sudo service mysql restart

*We will do the spotlighting
*Allow 15 seconds for attendees to join the webinar before beginning introductions
The '''Rodeo Four''' '''production server''' is a public-facing web application and database server that hosts the [[website]]. It was designed and developed by [[Mildly Geeky]], with additional features and bug fixes performed by [[Shotgun Flat]]. The server was provisioned by [[Peter Stevens]] using a DigitalOcean droplet. It features directory information for Center affiliates, a calendar of events, information about opportunities provided by the Center, news relating to the Center and its affiliates, and publications.

==Website updates==
In July 2017, [[Gila Naderi]] began conversations with [[Mike McKenna]] on the [[2018 Website Update Pilot Project]].

==Configurations==

===Web Root===

*
/srv/users/serverpilot/apps/cesproduction/craft/public

===Logs===

*
/srv/users/serverpilot/apps/cesproduction/craft/storage/runtime/logs/

===Cron jobs===

*Every Sunday at 8am, the server will execute
/etc/cron.d/certrenewal
. Note: the Let's Encrypt certificates may not be used by the web engine. They are stored as a standby in case of certificate lapses.

===Database root===
ServerPilot automatically generates a root account with a random password. The password is located in
/root/.my.cnf
.

===Password authentication===
Password authentication is temporarily turned on due to permission denied error messages.

===SSL===
The certificate is currently a Let's Encrypt certificate, which was installed on September 11, 2018, when the previous certificate expired without notification. The renewal was rejected, and a new one has been submitted and approved, but not yet installed. The expired InCommon certificate and key are located at the following paths respectively:

<nowiki>/etc/nginx-sp/certs/ces.fas.harvard.edu/ces1.unix.fas.harvard.edu.crt
/etc/nginx-sp/certs/ces.fas.harvard.edu/ces1.unix.fas.harvard.edu.key</nowiki>

The Let's Encrypt certificate and key are located at the following paths respectively:

<nowiki>/etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/fullchain.pem
/etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/privkey.pem</nowiki>

The renewed InCommon certificate and key are inactive and located at the following paths respectively:

<nowiki>/etc/ssl/certs/ces.fas.harvard.edu.cer
/etc/ssl/private/ces.fas.harvard.edu.key</nowiki>

====Cold standby====
In case of certificate lapse, uncomment the lines located in
/etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/ssl.conf
which point to the Let's Encrypt certificate and key.

====Updating certificate====

See [https://www.robertwent.com/blog/using-letsencrypt-serverpilot/ here] for full instructions.
<nowiki>
#Backup
mkdir ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates
mkdir ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts
sudo cp /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.conf ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/cesproduction.conf
sudo cp /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.d/main.conf ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/main.conf
sudo cp /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/ssl.conf ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/ssl.conf
cd /opt/certbot
./certbot-auto certonly --webroot -w /srv/users/serverpilot/apps/cesproduction/public -d ces.fas.harvard.edu
sudo service nginx-sp restart

#Rollback
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/cert.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/cert.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/chain.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/chain.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/fullchain.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/fullchain.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/privkey.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/privkey.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/README /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/README
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/cesproduction.conf /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.conf
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/main.conf /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.d/main.conf
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/ssl.conf /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/ssl.conf</nowiki>

This will update the certificate without modifying any configuration files. Server Pilot is touchy about modified configurations. This is what happens behind the scenes:

#Lets Encrypt gives certbot a challenge.
#Certbot places a resource with the challenge in a subdirectory of the web root, making it publicly visible.
#Let's Encrypt verifies the resource.
#Certbot removes the resource.
#Let's encrypt issues the certificate.
The '''web production server''' is a public-facing web application and database server that hosts the [[website]].

==Website updates==
In July 2017, [[Gila Naderi]] began conversations with [[Mike McKenna]] on the [[2018 Website Update Pilot Project]].

==Configurations==

===Web Root===

*
/srv/users/serverpilot/apps/cesproduction/craft/public

===Logs===

*
/srv/users/serverpilot/apps/cesproduction/craft/storage/runtime/logs/

===Cron jobs===

*Every Sunday at 8am, the server will execute
/etc/cron.d/certrenewal
. Note: the Let's Encrypt certificates may not be used by the web engine. They are stored as a standby in case of certificate lapses.

===Database root===
ServerPilot automatically generates a root account with a random password. The password is located in
/root/.my.cnf
.

===Password authentication===
Password authentication is temporarily turned on due to permission denied error messages.

===SSL===
The certificate is currently a Let's Encrypt certificate, which was installed on September 11, 2018, when the previous certificate expired without notification. The renewal was rejected, and a new one has been submitted and approved, but not yet installed. The expired InCommon certificate and key are located at the following paths respectively:

<nowiki>/etc/nginx-sp/certs/ces.fas.harvard.edu/ces1.unix.fas.harvard.edu.crt
/etc/nginx-sp/certs/ces.fas.harvard.edu/ces1.unix.fas.harvard.edu.key</nowiki>

The Let's Encrypt certificate and key are located at the following paths respectively:

<nowiki>/etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/fullchain.pem
/etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/privkey.pem</nowiki>

The renewed InCommon certificate and key are inactive and located at the following paths respectively:

<nowiki>/etc/ssl/certs/ces.fas.harvard.edu.cer
/etc/ssl/private/ces.fas.harvard.edu.key</nowiki>

====Cold standby====
In case of certificate lapse, uncomment the lines located in
/etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/ssl.conf
which point to the Let's Encrypt certificate and key.

====Updating certificate====

See [https://www.robertwent.com/blog/using-letsencrypt-serverpilot/ here] for full instructions.
<nowiki>
#Backup
mkdir ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates
mkdir ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts
sudo cp /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/chain.pem ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/chain.pem
sudo cp /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/fullchain.pem ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/fullchain.pem
sudo cp /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/privkey.pem ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/privkey.pem
sudo cp /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/README ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/README
sudo cp /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.conf ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/cesproduction.conf
sudo cp /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.d/main.conf ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/main.conf
sudo cp /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/ssl.conf ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/ssl.conf
cd /opt/certbot
./certbot-auto certonly --webroot -w /srv/users/serverpilot/apps/cesproduction/public -d ces.fas.harvard.edu
sudo service nginx-sp restart

#Rollback
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/cert.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/cert.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/chain.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/chain.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/fullchain.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/fullchain.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/privkey.pem /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/privkey.pem
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_certificates/README /etc/letsencrypt/live/ces.fas.harvard.edu/README
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/cesproduction.conf /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.conf
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/main.conf /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/cesproduction.d/main.conf
sudo cp ~/Backups/YYYY-MM-DD_vhosts/ssl.conf /etc/nginx-sp/vhosts.d/ssl.conf</nowiki>

'''Rod and Todd''' are Lenovo laptops used for presentations, succeeding [[Itchy and Scratchy]]. They were named after Rod and Todd Flanders from The Simpsons.

Todd is running with complete drivers and Windows updates. Some software is installed.

Rod has a fresh Windows 10 installation. Firefox, MSO, VoiceMeeter, Behringer drivers, Skype, OBS Studio, VLC, and Intel graphic drivers have been installed.

==Hardware==
===Known issues===
Rod's integrated camera is not accessible by Skype, although the LED indicator does turn on. It can be viewed through Lenovo Web Conferencing tool.

===Security questions===
These are the security question and answer pairs:

*What is the name of the city where you were born? Cambridge
*What is the name of the first school you attended? Harvard College
*What was your childhood nickname? Minda

==Setups==

===Skype===
Set up the laptop on the side of the table nearest to the projection screen, facing away from the audience. Set up the webcam on the back of a chair facing away from the projection screen. Use gaff tape to secure the webcam. Set up the [[Shure boundary microphones]] to maximize audience audibility. For example, if the audience is all on one side of the table, as in the case of a defense, put both microphones on that side of the table. Otherwise, if it is a round-table event, put one mic on each end of the table. They have a cardioid polar pattern, so orient them to maximize signal. Use gaff tape to secure the wires and make them as inconspicuous as possible. Plug the microphones into [[Larry White]] and turn on 48V phantom power.

In Skype's audio and video settings, set the playback device to the HDMI output. It may be labelled as "Crestron". Set the video device to the webcam used. Note that if the microphone device is set to the Behringer, Skype will only take the first channel. Skype does not mix it down to mono. To do this, open VoiceMeeter. Select the Behringer as input 1. Set the virtual output to mono. Then, in Skype's audio settings, choose VoiceMeeter as the microphone device.

==Notable events==

===Orientation 2019 crisis===
On September 5, 2019, one hour before the fall orientation, Todd failed midupdate, leaving it in an unbootable state. Lenovo recovery tools could not fix the problem. [[Peter Stevens]] attempted to replace the hard drive with [[Lola]]'s hard drive. However, Lola's hard drive was thicker than 7mm, preventing the bottom housing from mounting. Stevens used Vassilito for projection.

[[Michael Berrio]] attempted to reinstall Windows 7 Pro, but encountered an error stating that optical media drivers were missing. Rod and Todd do not have optical media. Nonetheless, installation could not be completed without the drivers.

Stevens suggested cloning Rod's hard drive to Todd and then resetting the product key. [[Jim Parada]] was using Rod at the time, so Stevens and Berrio waited until he left for the day to take his laptop and clone his data.

Berrio used Magical Jelly Bean to recover Todd's product key, because there was no sticker on the computer. It was only later that Berrio discovered that he had mistakenly copied the product ID. Berrio recovered the product key from BIOS memory on September 17.

To avoid mistake, Rod's data was first cloned to a 1TB drive using Clonezilla. Then the hard drive was reinstalled in Rod and given back to Parada.

Unfortunately, cloning a 1TB drive to a 500GB drive proved more complicated than expected. The resulting drive failed to boot. After several unsuccessful attempts, Berrio was able to find the optical drivers and copy them to the Windows 7 Pro bootable USB.

Stevens successfully reinstalled Windows 7 Pro more than a week later on September 13. For unknown reasons, Windows 7 refused to be installed on a GPT disk. Both disks were converted to MBR, and the BIOS settings for both computers was changed from UEFI to legacy.

Neither Rod nor Todd has a Lenovo recovery partition anymore.

===Skype foofaraw===
[[Derek Penslar]] asked for help with Skyping a professor in Chicago during his class in [[Giedrojc Gallery]] on September 18, 2019. Stevens set up the Skype call following the normal procedures. When tested, Skype would properly play audio out of the computer speakers when the playback device was set to Realtek audio. When the playback was set to the HDMI port, the audio included only the ringer sound but not the voice. When Stevens loaded a video of Binging with Babish to test audio outside of Skype, he found that the audio included the background music but not the voice-over. Because Stevens could hear artifacts in the sound, he assumed that the audio was being passed through a voice removal filter to prevent feedback. Coincidentally, [[John Pioccone]] arrived for an unrelated meeting. When Stevens described the issue, he checked the amplifier in the back and discovered that the channels were wired incorrectly. This flaw existed from the time of installation in 2013.

==Cisco phone usage==
If a phone has been physically moved to a new location, HUIT must be notified. This is so that the 911 location can be updated. If the location is not updated, police may be dispatched to the wrong location in an emergency. This rule must be strictly observed.
==Cisco phone usage==
If a phone has been physically moved to a new location, HUIT must be notified. This is so that the 911 location can be updated. If the location is not updated, police may be dispatched to the wrong location in an emergency. This rule must be strictly observed.
If a phone has been physically moved to a new location, HUIT must be notified. This is so that the 911 location can be updated. If the location is not updated, police may be dispatched to the wrong location in an emergency. This rule must be strictly observed.

===Increasing signal-to-noise ratio===
We want to reduce the amount of meaningless email we receive at ces@fas.harvard.edu. This mailbox is not an appropriate place for receiving automated messages such as newsletters or calls for applications. Users who wish to receive these types of communications should subscribe at their own email addresses. All IT-related notifications such as analytics or password changes should be redirected to ces-it@fas.harvard.edu.

===Checking email===

====Responding and archiving====

*Check the account at least three times a week. Other people may be waiting for you to address something.
*Do not delete any emails unless they are junk. Space is no longer a concern, but data loss it.
*If you are IT staff, leave academic emails marked as unread.
*If you are academic staff, leave IT emails marked as unread.
*If it is unclear which channel an email belongs to, or if it belongs to both, forward it to [[Peter Stevens]] and/or [[Vassilis Coutifaris]], then archive it.
*Reply to emails using your personal address. If there are other people who need to see the correspondence, CC them. Do not carry on long correspondences in the ces@fas.harvard.edu account. This will just add noise to the mailbox.
*After replying to an email, archive it.
*If an email does not require any further action, archive it.
*If an email is loitering in the inbox without explanation, forward it to either [[Peter Stevens]] or [[Vassilis Coutifaris]], then archive it. It is better to be too chatty than to assume someone else is taking care of it.

====Subscriptions and spam====

*If an email is an unsolicited marketing email, unsubscribe and mark as spam.
*If an email looks as though it may be phishing, forward it to phishing@harvard.edu.
*If an email has an "unsubscribe" link, click it.
*If an email is too important to unsubscribe from (e.g. account security notices), change the subscription to go either to your own email address or ces-it@fas.harvard.edu.
*If you do not have access to change the subscription, forward it to [[Peter Stevens]]
*If you are unsure if an email is too important to unsubscribe from, forward it to [[Peter Stevens]].
*If an automated email does not have an "unsubscribe" link, it is usually because it contains non-marketing information such as order confirmations or account changes. Change the email address for that account to be sent elsewhere.
